Several online and social media petitions have been launched to save the Boise State wrestling team after the university announced Tuesday that it was dropping the program.

Former Boise State wrestler Kevin Wood, who was on the team in 1979-1982 launched a Change.org campaign to garner 1,000 online signatures.

"Every time I walk in and watch the BSU wrestlers work out, I am in awe of the hard work, determination, and true heart these guys put in every single day," Wood said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the petition already has 4,200 signatures, which will be delivered to athletic director Curt Apsey and university president Bob Kustra, the petition states.

Twitter account @SaveBSUWrestlin was created after the news broke. A gofundme page was also started to create T-shirts and fliers to help create awareness. That campaign raised $1,000 in less than 14 hours, reaching its goal.

The university, which said Tuesday that move was to be better aligned with the Mountain West Conference, will be looking to add a baseball team in the future.
