CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sophomore second baseman Ya Garcia stayed in the zone with three hits and senior Lea Cavestany added two more as the Oregon State softball team dropped an 11-2 decision to Utah at the OSU Softball Complex on Saturday. The Utes (18-22-1) scored runs in each of its first four at-bats.
Garcia singled in all three of her plate appearances, giving her four multi-hit games in her past five outings. In those five games, Garcia is hitting .643 (9-for-14) with two RBIs and four runs scored. She also leads the team with a .366 batting average and .459 on-base percentage this season.
After falling behind 8-0 behind a pair of Kate Dickman home runs, the Beavers (25-15) broke through in their half of the fourth. Senior Ashley Sanchez led off the inning with a bunt single. She is now hitting .538 in her past five games. After a fielder's choice replaced Sanchez with freshman Natalie Hampton at first, Cavestany tripled her home to put the Beavers on the board. It is Cavestany's first triple of the season and first since her freshman season in 2010.
Garcia kick started the OSU fifth inning after two outs with a single and her eighth stolen base of the season. Sophomore Dani Gilmore plated her with a run-scoring single up the middle.
The Beavers and Utes conclude the series with the rubber match at noon tomorrow. The game will be broadcast on Pac-12 Mountain live and will be replayed on all affiliates at 4:00 p.m.
