No Navy fleet during Rose Festival because of sequester

PORTLAND, Ore. - Here's another consequence of the sequester budget cuts - Portland won't see any Navy ships during Rose Festival fleet week.

The Navy announced Tuesday evening that it is cancelling all ship visits to Portland and Seattle during the Rose Festival and Seattle's Seafair.

"Budget shortfalls due to sequestration are forcing the Navy and other military services to cut back on formal community outreach programs in 2013," the Navy said in a statement.

Rose Festival spokesman Rich Jarvis said the Royal Canadian Navy, Coast Guard and historical ships will still be on display during fleet week.

"Fleet week is still happening," Jarvis said.

"We appreciate the community's understanding during these uncertain budgetary times," said Rear Adm. Mark Rich. "We will continue to find ways to engage locally, in keeping with Department of Defense guidance. We are thankful for what Seattle, Portland, and our community partners do to support our service men and women every day."

Earlier Tuesday, the Navy said their Blue Angels jet team will also cancel appearances at the Oregon International Airshow and Seafair. The air show will instead feature the private Patriots Jet Team.

The Navy participates in fleet week and air shows to demonstrate their capabilities and recruit future sailors and marines.
