THE DALLES, Ore. - As the Government Flat Complex of wildfires continue to rage on, some folks in The Dalles say their water has starting having a smoky taste and odor to it.
Should they be concerned?
Not according to the city's Public Works Department, which issued this statement on Friday:
Some customers of the City of The Dalles water system are experiencing a smoky taste and odor in the water. This is a temporary aesthetic condition and not a health issue.
The smoky odor is a result of the fire which has filled the South Fork Mill Creek drainage basin, the source of the City's surface water, with heavy smoke. The fire was intense at times, dropping burning debris into the stream.
The Public Works Department is currently evaluating the extent of the smoky water and planning ways to improve the aesthetic water quality through options at the treatment plant or increased blending with well water in the City reservoirs.
Questions or concerns can be directed to the Public Works Department at (541) 296-5401, extension 2001.
