Waldo Lake motor ban goes to Oregon governor
SALEM, Ore. (AP) The Oregon Legislature has decided that all gas-powered engines should be banned from Waldo Lake.
The Oregon House approved the measure on Monday in a 37-20 vote. It now goes to Gov. John Kitzhaber.
The bill puts into law a state Marine Board rule banning gas-powered motorboats on the lake in the Cascade Mountains of Central Oregon.
It also would ban seaplanes, which are currently allowed limited access to Waldo Lake.
Boats powered by electric motors that stay under a 10 mph speed limit would still be permitted.
Proponents of the ban say it's needed to protect the lake's purity by minimizing the risks posed by pollution and invasive species.
Opponents say the ban is unnecessary because people previously used gas-powered boats and landed seaplanes without harming the lake.
