Searchers on horseback find missing man, 18, in central Oregon

BEND, Ore. Searchers on horseback Thursday morning found a teen missing from a wilderness program in Central Oregon since early Wednesday morning.

Search and rescue workers found Kevin Mulert, 18, about 1 1/2 miles southeast of the camp.

Searchers provided initial medical care and water as it appeared he was dehydrated.

Oregon State Police said a National Guard helicopter was reportedly taking him to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend for an examination.

State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings said Mulert, from Deerfield, Illinois, was reported missing from the therapeutic nature camp at about 8 a.m. Wednesday. He was last seen that morning at about 4:30 a.m.

The camp is about six miles south of Frederick Butte, which is about 60 miles southeast of Bend.

Hastings declined to name the wilderness program at the request of program officials.

He said Mulert was reportedly not wearing shoes, wasn't dressed for the weather and was unfamiliar with the remote area.
