CORBETT, Ore. – Oregon State Parks decided bicycling through a segment of the Columbia River Gorge will be prohibited during the summer of 2018 while crews continue cleanup efforts and trail construction in the Eagle Creek Fire burn area.

Bike Portland reported on the decision Friday.

According to Bike Portland, an Oregon State Parks employee emailed them with the news Thursday night. The state department hopes the message spreads through the bicycling community so that no one begins traveling down Interstate-84 and then gets abruptly stopped by the closure.

The Historic Highway State Trail route is open between Hood River and Mosier, Bike Portland reports, but it’s still closed for riders to get from Bridal Veil to Hood River.

Bicycle riders hoping to go through the Gorge will need to cross the Columbia River and take SR-14 in Washington.

The Oregon Department of Transportation says the only hiking trail closure is from John Yeon State Park to Cascade Locks. ODOT says it should be reopened by the end of summer.
