ExplOregon: Lane County's covered bridges
Lane County has more covered bridges than any other county in the state. There are also tours you can take to stop along some of our prominent covered bridges.
There's nothing compared to fall in Oregon, the weather is getting cooler and the leaves are changing. If that's not enough, Lane County is known for its covered bridges.
The Exploregon team traveled down to Cottage Grove and drove the Covered Bridge Tour. You can also bike along the scenic bikeway which follows the same route. You’ll see seven covered bridges on this tour.
“The state at one point had 300 bridges, that’s a lot,” Lane County Museum Executive Director Robert Hart says.
The bridges are all unique and attract different types of people; for some it’s history; for others it’s architecture.
"I like the nostalgic of them, I think they're really beautiful and I'm so happy that we have a lot of them in Oregon to visit,” said Maggie Coleman, who was doing the bridge tour.
According to Hart, "Today, Lane County retains about 20; 17 of those are in the National Register of Historic Places."
Many are maintained and still in use.
