Boy drowns: 'Everyone was screaming, Call 911'
COOS BAY, Ore. -- After an 8-year-old boy drowned in the Upper Empire Lakes at John Topits Park, people who were there to witness it are sharing their stories.
Kristian Croy of Coos Bay was swimming with his family when he drowned.
Susan Kyllo says she was in the area when it happened. "I heard all this screaming and went to find out that the child had gone under," she said.
John Hamilton dove in to help. "We knew that it was serious, everyone was screaming, 'Call 911,'"
Coos Bay and North Bend police and fire departments, The US Coast Guard and the Lakeside dive team all responded, but unfortunately, it was too late.
Hamilton says it wasn't easy to be there. "It was a rough night after that," he said. "We were still here when they recovered the body, just a few minutes before 7:00. Seeing his limp body being carried across on the kayak, and the family realizing, this is real, that's not something I was expecting."
Kyllo says it is a day she won't be able to forget. "It's just a sad day to remember, that I was even here for that."
