CAMAS, Wash. - A 13-year-old boy suffered head injuries after falling 10 to 15 feet from a rope swing near Camas Friday afternoon, firefighters said.
Camas-Washougal Fire Chief Nick Swinhart said the boy was conscious when paramedics arrived at the steep canyon near Dahlia Street, but he was in danger of becoming hypothermic. The rope swing is located above a creek in the canyon.
The boy was taken to a Portland hospital. His name has not been released.
"CWFD would like to use this opportunity to remind all area residents that despite the return of warm weather, local bodies of water are significantly colder than may be thought and currents are always faster than assumed," Swinhart said in a news release. "Forested canyons in the area may provide a cool respite from heat, but access is typically very slippery and one wrong step can mean the difference between fun and tragedy."
