EUGENE, Ore. - This year remains the driest on record for Eugene, even after the heavens opened up and dumped rain during the final fortnight of May.
On May 21, more rain fell by noon than in the previous 20 days combined.
The rain kept coming down, pushing May 2013 to record wet status in Vancouver, Washington, where almost 5 inches of rain fell.
But Eugene finished the month with barely 2 inches of rain, pushing the total to 8.57 inches for the year.
That's 37 percent of normal - and still a fraction of an inch drier than 2001, when 8.83 inches of rain had fallen by June 1.
The longterm average for the save period of time is 23.36 inches.
