Smoky sunrise over Western Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. - Wildfire smoke will continue to foul the air over Western Oregon through at least Friday, the state's air monitors warned this week.

The air pollution amidst a record-setting heat wave is sending people to the hospital in numbers comparable to flu season, health care workers said.

But there's an upside.

Look to the west in the evening for sunsets that will take the rest of your breath away.

Or look to the east in the morning, like KVAL photojournalist Gary Sherman did August 9.

Here's a timelapse video of the smoky sunrise on - coincidence of coincidences - Smokey Bear's birthday.

(Note: Changes in color noticeable in the video are the result of Sherman adjusting the camera to better capture the true color of the sunrise).
