What does it take to drive a school bus?
EUGENE, Ore. - School is back in session, which means you've probably seen more school buses on the road.
The Eugene 4J School District has about 100 drivers taking students to and from school.
Bus drivers go through a lot of training, said Chris Ellis, 4J Transportation Manager.
He said their drivers exceed the minimum number of hours required by the Oregon Department of Education.
Statewide, new drivers must have 15 hours of training, but Ellis said 4J drivers train up to 35 hours.
They also put in more hours of safety training each year.
"We have an absolutely extraordinary group of school bus drivers, and I'm not just speaking about the Eugene school district," Ellis said. "Locally we have a great group."
When it comes to safety, there are many things bus drivers need to consider from student management and navigating a 40 foot bus to public education.
Bus drivers are responsible for driving about 5,800 students a day, that's about a third of students in the district.
4J is looking for more drivers. You can apply online.
