Navy to school district: Sorry about that penis drawing

OKANOGAN, Wash. (KOMO) -- The Navy has told the school district here that it is sorry for the penis its pilot drew over Central Washington last month.

On Nov. 16, people in Okanogan County saw the image and it quickly went viral.

Officials at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island later confirmed that one of its aircraft was responsible, saying an an F/A-18 Growler flew in a pattern "that left a condensed air trail resembling an obscene image to observers on the ground. "

In a letter posted on the Okanogan School District 105 Facebook page on Tuesday, Vice Adm. T.M. Shoemaker, commander of U.S. naval air forces, apologizes for "the unacceptable and obscene contrails" and later refers to the incident as "juvenile and impulsive act."

Shoemaker said he has held the Whidbey Island-based crew, whom the Navy said had been grounded after the incident, accountable and talked to crews in the state and throughout the Navy. "I impressed upon them that this immature act was counter to our culture which values treating everyone with dignity and respect ..."

Superintendent Richard Johnson wrote on Facebook that he was pleased with the letter.

"It is always encouraging when one’s concerns have been listened to and actions taken to prevent similar incidents. Of course, the Navy’s apology is fully accepted and the respect we have always had for our armed services is fully restored."
