Officers were called Thursday by a woman who claimed she escaped after roughly four days in captivity. She told officers that she got into an argument Monday with 26-year-old Kristopher Lawless, who escalated the verbal dispute by beating the woman unconscious, police said Friday.
The woman reportedly awoke to find herself bound in Lawless' home on the 3800 block of Balboa Drive, near Planz Road and South H Street. Lawless allegedly threatened to kill the woman, strangled her, repeatedly stabbed her, burned her, gagged her and bit her repeatedly throughout her body.
Police said the woman, whose name was withheld, had "significant visible injuries" and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Officers arrested Lawless without incident at his home within hours of being called by the alleged victim. Unspecified evidence of the torture, along with drugs, were found at Lawless' home, police said.
Lawless was booked into Kern County jail on suspicion of attempted murder, aggravated mayhem, torture, false imprisonment, spousal abuse, criminal threats, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
