Woman hit, killed by semi on I-5 near Sutherlin
SUTHERLIN, Ore. - A woman ran into traffic on Interstate 5 and got hit by a semi truck Tuesday afternoon near Sutherlin, Oregon State police said.
Just after 4 p.m., trucker Beant Singh, 36, of Yuba City, Calif., was southbound in the righthand lane near Sutherlin when a woman ran from the shoulder toward the median across his lane of travel, police said.
Singh veered into the center lane in an attempt to avoid the woman. The rear wheels of the trailer hit the woman.
The pedestrian, identified as Laura Lee James, 51, died at the scene.
The investigation closed I-5 southbound, with a detour through Sutherlin. Motorists experienced delays until after 8 p.m.
