A 22-year-old student from Western Oregon University was killed in a car crash on Interstate 5 on Tuesday, according to Oregon State Police.

Brandon Lin of Portland was taken to the hospital but died during surgery.

OSP said Lin was the passenger in a 2006 Honda that crashed into a tow truck.

Both vehicles were in the northbound lanes near milepost 256 in Salem when the crash happened around 5 p.m. Police said the driver of the Honda was changing lanes when she hit the truck and lost control of the car. The car smashed into a tree on the right shoulder.
