Trucker escapes injury as big rig forced off road crashes into rock wall
EDDYVILLE, Ore. - A trucker escaped injury when his big rig went off the road into a ditch and collided with a rock wall Thursday evening on Highway 20, Oregon State Police.
Donald Bumgardner, 71, of Lebanon was not hurt in the crash, police said.
His truck overturned, dumping bales of cardboard and blocking Hwy 20 for several hours.
The crash happened just after 5:30 p.m. Bumgardner told police he was westbound when he came upon an unidentified oncoming vehicle that had crossed the centerline. Bumgardner said he steered to the right, and his truck's tires went off the pavement onto the soft shoulder.
Baumgardner tried to bring his truck back onto the road but crashed into a rock wall after 300 feet.
Several bales of cardboard and a small fork lift came off the trailer.
The truck came to rest next to railroad tracks that parallel the road. Train traffic stopped until the truck was removed.
The recovery effort blocked Highway 20 for 2 hours. All lanes were open by 3 a.m.
