Toddler tossed from second story, saved from apartment fire in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Eugene-Springfield Fire Department battled an apartment fire at 582 28th St. in Springfield Tuesday morning.

Upon arrival, crews found one unit fully involved. A worker from across the street saw the fire and called 911.

According to officials, the workers heard screaming and found a family of 5 trapped on the second floor.

The family tossed a toddler from the second story and caught him, the report said.

The rest of the family then lowered themselves out of the window Into the the outreached hands of the two workers along with one dog, saving their lives.

The two men also woke 10 other people at the apartment complex by yelling and banging on doors and got them to safety, the report said.

15 people were displaced.

Preliminary investigation shows a heat lamp caused the fire, officials said.

Deputy Fire Marshal Gilbert Gordon says the lamp experienced some kind of failure and fell, sparking the fire.

The primary occupancy was completely destroyed and the apartment below suffered water damage, officials said.

Red Cross assisted with the displaced occupants.

The fire is currently under investigation.
