EUGENE, Ore. - From the Oregon Trail to the Oregon Ducks, the Beaver State holds a special place in the hearts of many people.
So it's fitting the state celebrates statehood on Valentine's Day.
"I've been around and around," said David Jacobson of Veneta, "and I tell you there's no other place I'd rather be."
Oregon joined the Union as the 33rd state on February 14, 1859.
To celebrate Oregon's birthday, KVAL News quizzed residents on some of the state's official symbols.
The state animal?
"Beaver!" Jeffrey Williams of Eugene said.
How about the state bird?
"It's the mallard duck!" Maya Thomas of Eugene said.
Sorry, that's incorrect.
"I don't know," Williams said. "Blue jay?"
"That would be the meadowlark," Jacobson said.
We have our winner.
Next: What is the state beverage?
"I would have to say ... that's Ninkasi," Jeffry Henshen of Eugene joked.
Close? It's milk.
