Tasty Tuesday: Big Stuff Barbecue

Tasty Tuesday: Big Stuff Barbecue

After spending four years in South Carolina, I consider myself somewhat of a barbecue fanatic. Since moving to Eugene, I've always been on the hunt for Oregon's version of the majestic meat and three. My search for barbecue took me to Cottage Grove, where I found big flavor and big portions at Big Stuff Barbecue.

Big Stuff Barbecue is a mainstay of Main Street in downtown Cottage Grove, racking up 12 years of smoky success.

They smoke, make and boil pretty much everything. Brisket, pork, ham, ribs, chicken, hot links - and don't get me started on the sides. Mac and cheese, baked beans, homemade barbecue sauce and dry rubs - if you love barbecue and you're hankering for something, chances are you'll find it on Big Stuff's menu.

Two brothers, Ira and Simon Martinez, run Big Stuff. The Brothers Martinez are constantly on their feet- chopping up the barbecue, stirring a massive pot of beans, running to customers to hand them a fork or ask them how their food is. Despite the geographical distance, they do Southern Hospitality at it's finest.

"We've actually had some families tell us they plan their trips back and forth on our hours here so they can come through have lunch go see family, stay there and then come back through hit us for dinner and then go home," Ira told me.

And the brothers practice what they preach. Ira says he eats the Big Stuff brisket almost every day! Now that's dedication.

The brothers were kind enough to whip up a sampler plate for me and KVAL photographer Doug Schwindt. So. Much. Barbecue. So. Many. Sides. With assorted meats, homemade macaroni and cheese, and delightful cornbread muffins, combined with a root beer float, it was a match made it heaven.
