Tasty Tuesday: Big Kahuna Bowls
Big Kahuna Bowls brings a taste of Hawaii right here to Lane County with their acai and pitaya bowls.
An acai bowl is essentially a very thick smoothie bowl. It's banana, strawberry, blueberry and acai berry, all blended up and then spooned into a bowl. The finishing touch, and the real draw for customers, are the toppings.
Co-Owner Elliot Gruver broke in down for us.
"Lots of fresh fruit, granola, honey- and other healthy options, like bee pollen, flax seed, chia seeds," Elliot explained.
Their pitaya bowl is a beautiful bright pink and the base for a variety of their menu items.
"We knew that acai and pitaya in particular were going to be popular because they're so good for you, and refreshing on a hot day," Elliot said.
Each bowl is based on those two blends, but the toppings are what make them unique. For instance, the RainBowl, an acai bowl decked out in nature's natural rainbow. Fruit!
Big Kahuna Bowls is still a fairly new establishment, but both owners are confident big bowls mean big business.
"Everyone was saying it was a good idea, so we were able to pull it off," Elliot said. "It's working out good for us."
Elliot says their main goal is to grow as a business and add more menu items. Ideally, Big Kahuna Bowls would become a local chain- but for now, they're just content with their local following in Eugene.
