SWAT arrests barricaded assault suspect at 13th & Charnelton

EUGENE, Ore. -- An assault suspect barricaded himself in an apartment off Charnelton Street Thursday night, prompting officers to shut down the street between 12th and 13th Ave. while a SWAT and Crisis Negotiation team worked to diffuse the situation, Eugene Police said.

Emergency dispatch call logs show that officers and emergency crews were called out to 1350 Charnelton for an "assault with injury" at around 6:00 p.m. Thursday.

Witnesses told our reporters a man locked himself inside an apartment building after police responded to a fight in the area.

Officers surrounded a building on Charnelton, where police say 36-year-old Kevin Scott Eckhardt had barricaded himself in a second-floor apartment.

A child was with Eckhardt in the apartment. Eugene Police said the child was "safe throughout the incident and is now with another family member."

Police took Eckhardt into custody at around 10:30 p.m. Thursday. He was charged with 1st-degree burglary, assault, criminal mischief, and strangulation.

McLaughlin said police had probable cause to arrest Eckhardt on felony charges after Eckhardt barricaded himself in the apartment.

She added that a woman was arrested for crossing the police line and interfering with the situation.
