Sutherlin police arrest man, charge with attempted homicide
SUTHERLIN, Ore. -- Sutherlin police say they arrested a man on Wednesday and charged him with attempted homicide, after they say he tried to choke a woman to death.
Officials say they were called to a residence in the 600 block of NW First Ave., for a call about an assault that had just occurred.
Sutherlin police and a Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputy responded to the scene.
Authorities say that an investigation revealed that Jess Patrick Stephenson, 31, had allegedly tried to choke a 60-year-old woman to death with his hands.
Police say the woman received minor injuries.
Stevenson was taken into custody without incident and was lodged in the Douglas County Jail, according to police.
He was charged by police with attempt to commit homicide and felony strangulation.
His bail was set at $150,000.
Police say the two were known to each other, and that their investigation revealed that meth use by the suspect may have been a factor in what happened.
