EUGENE, Ore. -- A Springfield man died in a crash Friday night after his pickup was hit in the driver's side while he made a turn onto Highway 20 from Ellmaker State Park, police investigators said.
Officials said the crash happened at around 6:40 p.m. Friday when Jerry McLaughlin, 64, of Springfield tried to make a right-hand turn onto the highway from the state park, located about halfway between Newport and Corvallis on Highway 20.
Officials said McLaughlin stopped at a stop sign near the state park's entrance and turned is silver Mitsubishi pickup into the westbound lanes. State troopers said he was hit in the driver's side by a westbound Dodge pickup, driven by 63-year-old Albany resident Richard Barney.
Officials said McLaughlin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Barney and his wife, who was a passenger in the Dodge pickup, were unhurt in the crash.
Law enforcement said the highway was closed for about a half-hour before they reopened one lane to traffic. Crash investigators were on-scene for about five hours before reopening both lanes to traffic.
Officials said everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.
