GLENWOOD, Ore. - The unincorporated Glenwood area has undergone two refinement plans, one in the 1980s and again in the mid 1990s.
Since then, the area has been only a thoroughfare for commuters between the City of Eugene and the City of Springfield.
Springfield's Community Development Manager, John Tamulonis, is overseeing the current Glenwood Refinement Plan and says the location of Glenwood is challenging.
"It's between the two cities and most places, the area between the large cities tend to be developed more intensely," Tamulonis said, "and earlier than other areas. Not here because we haven't had sewers, we haven't had adopted plans that looked to the future - and now we have those."
The Springfield City Council voted unanimously Monday to allow the city manager to sell two lots in Glenwood to a private developer hoping to build a $7 million dollar hotel.
The planned 5-story hotel will have close to 100 upscale rooms and will sit on two lots just east of the newly built Interstate 5 Willamette River Bridge on Franklin Boulevard. The hotel will also boast views of the beautiful Willamette River.
Longtime local business owner Steve Moe strongly supports the plans. "I sort of call it the seed for Glenwood," Moe said. "This will be the first rally good development we've had."
Garry Weber, owner of the nearby Roaring Rapids Pizza Co. set along the south bank of the Willamette River, called the project a no-brainer. "As you look behind me and you see the beautiful view that customers and guests get to enjoy when they come down here, why wouldn't you want development here in the Glenwood area?"
The would-be purchaser, Rick Satre, says it will likely be part of a national hotel chain, but declined to say which one.
Before construction can begin, Satre must relocate an historical house, which was built in 1910. In the contract, the City of Springfield requested the house be spared and moved to a new location.
Tamulonis said construction is expected to begin in August of this year.
