EUGENE, Ore. - A neighbor who came to a man's aid after a fire started in the engine compartment of a car was overcome by smoke and had to be taken to the hospital, firefighters at the scene said Thursday.
The fire started while a man was working on his vintage Corvette in the 1600 block of McKinley Street.
Neighbors reported hearing some kind of pop, followed by smoke.
One of the people who ran to assist the man was taken to the hospital after exposure to smoke.
The fire was contained to the car.
Firefighters said a fire extinguisher failed to function before emergency crews arrived.
Investigators were trying to determine what ignited the fire.
