OAKRIDGE, Ore. - A big rig hit a guardrail and overturned near Willamette Pass Ski area, seriously injuring the co-trucker as he slept in the sleeper berth.
William Morris, 50, of Nampa, Idaho, was taken from the scene by air ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield with serious but non-life threatening injuries, state police said.
The crash happened as trucker Teodor Margineanu, 64, of Portland drove westbound on Highway 58 just after 1 a.m.
The truck failed to negotiate a righthand curve, instead crossing the eastbound lane and colliding with a guardrail, police said.
The truck damaged 300 feet of rail before overturning on its side, spilling some of its load of medical supplies on the road.
Margineanu was not injured. Oregon State Police cited him for Failure to Maintain Lane - and later gave him a ride to an area hotel.
The response to the wreck closed both eastbound lanes for about an hour. One lane was open again by 9 a.m.
