Slash pile fire gets out of control

PLEASANT HILL, Ore. - Volunteer firefighters responded to an out-of-control slash burn northeast of Pleasant Hill on Thursday

The fire had burned a 1/2 acre and was spreading uphill into heavy timber when units arrived on scene, said Captain Chooch Vanis.

Fireifghters worked to contain the blaze and kept it to less than an acre, Vanis said.

This was the second fire in 5 days in that area, Vanis said.

An early start to fire season will have an impact on the volunteers in his department, he said.

Everyone has another job, and a longer fire season means more time spent on fire calls and less time spent with their families, he said.
