Sheriff: Man arrested after calling phone he dropped at crime scene
COOS BAY, Ore. -- Coos County deputies say they arrested a man after he unknowingly called authorities, who happened to have the phone he dropped while trespassing at a home.
On Sunday at about 1:35 pm, Coos County Sheriff's deputies were called to an area on Ellen Road for a report of a man who was on a property refusing to leave.
It was reported that the male was also breaking a window and causing damage at the residence.
When Deputies arrived, they say the man had fled the area, but a cell phone was found at the scene that he had dropped.
Authorities identified the man as Shaun Cole Nix, 39, of Coos Bay.
A short time later, deputies say Nix called his cell phone that the deputy had located at the scene, and asked to meet the person who had found the phone.
They say he didn't realize he was talking to Sheriff's deputies.
The deputy answered the phone and referred to himself by first name and told Mr. Nix he found the phone and would meet him at the Bachelors Inn in the Bunker Hill area.
The deputy told Nix he would be driving a white car and would meet him in a few minutes.
When Nix returned to the area to claim his phone, authorities say he realized what was happening and he attempted to flee.
After a short foot pursuit he was taken into custody by members of the Coos Bay Police Department and the Coos County Sheriff's Office.
Nix was arrested for Criminal Trespass II and Criminal Mischief II, as well as additional charges of parole violation and fail to register as a sex offender.
He was transported to the Coos County Jail and lodged.
