Sheriff: Eugene man shot, killed by friend on camping trip
BLUE RIVER, Ore. - A Junction City man shot and killed his friend after awaking to loud noises he believed to be gunshots, the Lane County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies jailed Joshua Montez, 42, of Junction City on one count of Manslaughter 2, the Lane County Sheriff's Office said.
Montez has cooperated with law enforcement, the sheriff's office said. The case has been referred to the district attorney for review.
Deputies responded to a report of a shooting at Mona Campground around 1:27 a.m. Saturday.
The investigation found that Montez and his family was camping there with 48-year-old Steven "Troy" Moody of Eugene and Moody's family.
"Montez reportedly woke up in the middle of the night and heard loud noises that he thought were gunfire and unknown people talking nearby," the sheriff's office said in a report. "Montez retrieved his handgun when he saw a person cross through the campground. Montez fired his weapon in the direction of the person who was later identified as his friend, Moody."
Moody was taken to the hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound, the sheriff's office said. He was pronounced dead shortly after 3 a.m.
