LINN COUNTY -- Authorities in Linn County are investigating after a body was found in a vehicle submerged in the Willamette River.

Around 8 p.m. Tuesday, a ferry boat operator spotted the vehicle in the river near the Buena Vista Ferry ramp, Linn County Sheriff's Office reports.

Deputies arrived on scene a short time later and, with assistance from fire personnel, located the vehicle and what appeared to be a "deceased, elderly person inside," the sheriff's office said.

Due to the darkness, cold weather and fast current, deputies could not safely bring in a dive team to recover the vehicle, the report said.

Wednesday morning at 8 a.m., authorities say a dive team with Linn County Sheriff's Office assisted in the recovery of the vehicle and the person inside.

"At this point deputies are investigating the case as a tragic accident," the sheriff's office said in a news release.

The driver was identified as Anne Marie Rose, 89, of Salem. Investigators believe she accidently drove into the water at the entrance to the Buena Vista Ferry.

The initial report from the sheriff's office identified the location of the car as the Santiam River. The sheriff later clarified the car was found in the Willamette River.
