Severely injured skier rescued by chopper from Stevens Pass area

STEVENS PASS, Wash. - A Snohomish County sheriff's team rescued a severely injured skier by helicopter Saturday from the 5,200-foot level near Stevens Pass.

The back-country skier sustained serious injuries after losing a ski and falling approximately 100 yards while outside the Stevens Pass Ski Area boundaries, the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Stevens Pass Ski Patrol was first on scene to render aid, providing first aid and strapping the skier to a backboard.

Snohomish County's Helicopter Rescue Team then responded to the scene and lowered a specially trained rescue technician who readied the victim for hoisting into the helicopter.

Once on board the helictoper, the "SnoHawk 10," the skier was flown to Providence Hospital in Everett for treatment.

The name and hometown of the skier were not immediately known. His condition was not available.
