Secret to 58 years of marriage? 'Don't go to bed mad'
COQUILLE, Ore. - It was 58 years ago that a logger working near Powers noticed a new girl in town.
That logger was Keith Schaffer. "I see this strange girl walking across the bridge and I told my brother, "That's the girl I'm going to marry," and I did marry her," Keith said.
It was love at first site, according to Keith.
He also says their two minds worked like one. "When I'd be out working I'd come home and say something, and she'd say, I've been thinking about that all day!"
The Schaffers have 4 kids, 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
What is the secret to so many years of marriage? Abbie Schaffer says it's simple: "If you disagree, discuss it. Don't go to bed mad."
"People won't believe it, but we've never had an argument since we've been married," Keith said. "We disagree on a lot of stuff, but we talk about it and decide what we're going to do and we go to bed happy. That's the biggest secret."
They say 58 years isn't enough. They plan to be happy for many more years to come. "I'd like to live to be 100 if I could be well, you know, but we'll just do what we can," Abbie said.
