Search party looking for missing Portland woman after car found abandoned in Cottage Grove
COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. - The family of a missing Portland woman whose cell phone and car were found in two different Lane County cities plans to conduct a search party here Tuesday afternoon.
Demi Helenius, 23, attended a self-help conference in Portland last weekend.
She failed to contact her family Saturday night, and did not attend the conference on Sunday.
Friends and family planned to search Tuesday afternoon, starting near the place where Helenius' car was found Monday.
Cell phone found in Creswell
On Saturday night, a man left a cell phone belonging to Helenius at the Dairy Queen in Creswell.
Then the phone rang.
"I found out it was the brother of the missing individual, and he was looking for her, didn't know anything about where Creswell was or why it would be down here," manager Samantha Lyn-Metz said Monday.
Detectives say they talked to the man, who told them he found the phone in a nearby parking lot after seeing someone throw an object from a car.
Car found in Cottage Grove
A black 2013 VW Bug belonging to Helenius was found Monday in Cottage Grove near a gas station on Highway 99.
"This car has been there for like two days," Terry Fenn said Monday. "I thought they were just visiting the park because we're not allowed to park in the park. Today, as I left, I noticed it was still there. I came back at lunch and the forensics was there. "There must have been three or four cop cars and, like I said, the forensic van they had out."
Investigators said they found no signs of foul play after examining the car. They plan to examine the car more closely at the Oregon State Police crime lab.
