Search called off for man who fell 800 feet from cliff along Oregon coast
TILLAMOOK COUNTY, Ore. – Rescue crews called off the search for a 51-year-old Canadian man who fell into the Pacific Ocean while hiking along a bluff near Devil’s Cauldron.
According to law enforcement, Joseph and Sarah Lescene, of British Columbia, were hiking along a trail in an area known as Elk Flats when about 3:20 p.m. Joseph lost his footing and fell from a nearly 800-foot cliff.
Rescue crews recovered his backpack from the water below the cliff, however Joseph was not found.
The rescue effort was called off at sunset. As of Tuesday, officials said they do not suspect foul play.
The U.S. Coast Guard, Oregon State Police, Manzanita Police, Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office, Nehalem Bay Fire & Rescue, and Tillamook Regional Medical Center Ambulance all took part in the rescue effort.
