School districts settle sex abuse lawsuit for $575K

EUGENE, Ore. - A young woman sexually abused by her track coach when she was 15 settled a lawsuit against the Eugene and Springfield school districts for $575,000.

The lawsuit, which initially sought $18.6 million in damages, claimed the Eugene School District failed to protect the girl from Chad Schacht, a track coach at Sheldon High School. Schacht pleaded guilty to 7 counts of sexually abusing the girl and is currently serving a 5 1/2 year prison sentence.

The lawsuit said the Springfield district failed to warn Eugene schools about inappropriate behavior by Schacht as a teacher at Agnes Stewart Middle School prior to the abuse of the victim.

Neither district wanted to speak on camera. They issued a joint statement which said "it was in their best financial interests to settle the case rather than incurring the significant cost of taking it to court."
