Salem man dies after crashing pickup into Detroit Lake

SALEM, Ore. -- A 32-year-old man died after he crashed his pickup truck into Detroit Lake late Saturday night.

Officials said Michael Fischer Jr., 32 of Salem, was driving west on Highway 22E when just before midnight he lost control of his Ford F-150 and went off the roadway.

The pickup went down a steep embankment at milepost 47 and into the lake before it sank underwater, witnesses driving eastbound on the highway said.

State police officers, deputies from the Marion County Sheriff's Office, local fire departments and the Oregon Department of Transportation were all called out to help retrieve the truck from the lake.

About an hour after the crash two troopers found the submerged pickup and hooked up a tow cable, state police officials said.

Once the truck had been pulled from the water police found the driver dead inside the cab.
