SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Roseburg Forest Products is expanding its national footprint.

That means a new plant - and new jobs - outside of Oregon.

On Tuesday morning, the Oregon-based company announced the construction of a new engineered wood products plant in Chester, South Carolina.

The plant will create 148 full-time jobs on the East Coast.

The family-owned company just took a leap forward from being one of Roseburg’s largest employers.

This new plant will make them the largest US manufacturer of engineered wood products serving independent distributors.

Company officials said their decision to expand took a lot of planning.

They looked at several sites over the last several months where they wanted to locate the new plant.

Many of their customers are based in the southeastern portion of the US.

South Carolina is close to good raw materials which will help supply the operation.

“One of the nice pieces about this plant in South Carolina is that it will complement the engineered wood products plant that we currently have down in Douglas County, down in riddle. So that's a nice piece as well that they're complimenting each other, verses losing business,” said Kellye Wise with Roseburg Forest Products.

On Tuesday morning, company officials were in South Carolina holding a press conference with community and state officials.

Roseburg Forest Products plans to close on the property in Chester within the next 30 days.

Company officials said this new plant will be the most technologically advanced manufacturing facility of its kind in the world with the highest capacity continuous LVL press in the world.

Wise said the company is interested in expanding, growing.

He did not express any intention of closing the Riddle location.

Although the expansion was just announces, Wise said the feedback from the Oregon community has been positive.

They are starting this new plant from scratch so it will take a while.

The company won't break ground until 2018, and the plant won't start operations until late 2019.

Wise said the company is always looking to this might not be their last major move.
