Sheriff: RCC threat determined a hoax
SOUTHERN OREGON —
Rogue Community College evacuated all campuses due to a threat received via email on Friday.
RCC received the threat at 10:30 a.m. from a person claiming they were a student at the college and was going to bring a rifle to class. The email did not indicate what campus they attended.
School administration at the Redwood Campus in Josephine County ordered an evacuation and closed the school for the remainder of the day.
Deputies with Josephine County Sheriff's Office responded and assisted with the evacuation.
A further investigation revealed the name of the person associated with the email who was not a student at either campus in Josephine or Jackson Counties.
Jackson County also handled a similar incident at the Jackson County campus that same morning. The person associated with that email address was contacted at his home by deputies.
In both incidents, the persons associated with the email accounts had been hacked and similar threatening email was sent to numerous locations in Oregon, Colorado, and Florida.
JCSO has determined the incident was a hoax.
All campuses will be open on Saturday, February 11th.
