WINSTON, Ore. - Officers arrested a 27-year-old man suspected of fracturing the skull, wrists and legs of his girlfriend's 8-month-old daughter, Winston Police said.

Zach Wilton Kagarise faces charges of Criminal Mistreatment and Assault. Police took him into custody Tuesday.

The investigation started August 6 when the child's mother took her to Mercy Medical Center, police said.

The hospital contacted police, and the state Department of Human Services removed the child from the home, according to police.

Doctors determined that the infant suffered fractures to the skull, wrists and legs, in addition to bruises and abrasions. Doctors at Oregon Health Sciences and University later detected additional fractures that were 3 to 4 weeks old, police said.

"The mother to the infant was cooperative and protective and left the home as well," police said.

Kagarise was not the child's father, police said.
