Police take man into custody who claimed he had a bomb near shopping center
EUGENE, Ore. - A man at a shopping center who claimed to have a bomb strapped to his body was taken into custody for a mental health evaluation Wednesday, authorities said.
The incident happened just before noon in the parking lot of the Delta Oaks shopping center in front of Guitar Center.
Eugene Police officers and Oregon State Police troopers responded and took the man into custody.
Employees inside the Guitar Center and surrounding shops asked customers to move away from the windows.
“And then all of the sudden there was just like a pile of cops right here on the corner who knocked on the window telling us to walk back to the back of the store,” said Tanner Lucero, a nearby store employee.
Another nearby store employee said police told them the man in the parking lot claimed he had explosives.
No explosives were found.
Police have not released the subject’s name, but identified him as a man in his 60s.
