Police: Standoff ends with Marine veteran dead

NORTH BEND, Ore. - A gunman barricaded himself inside a home in North Bend Sunday night, and after shooting at police, took his own life, according to officials.

It started around 8:45 p.m., when more than a dozen police units from North Bend, Coos Bay and the Coos County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.

According to Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier, the incident started when an officer responded to a report of gunfire on Commercial Street in North Bend.

Fraiser says when the officer arrived, he was shot at several times by Danny Retallick, 27.

Officials say Retallick is a Marine veteran.

"What started this thing is, a police officer almost got shot last night," said Fraiser.

Fraiser says Retallick died of a self inflicted gun shot wound to the head.

Retallick's family was distraught as they stood outside their home.

No officers were hurt and an investigation is underway.
