Police: Shoplifter shows knife, runs from Valley River Center

EUGENE, Ore. --A K-9 unit helped catch a shoplifting suspect near the Delta Ponds Saturday afternoon shortly after the man pulled out a knife when confronted by a Valley River Center employee, mall security said.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Security with Valley River said the man stole some merchandise from the JC Penny store. He took out a knife when a loss prevention employee told the man to stop, police said.

Eugene Police set up a perimeter along the Willamette River bike path. A Springfield PD K-9 unit found the man, later identified as 24-year-old Michael Deluca, hiding near the walking bridge in the Delta Ponds area, police officials said.

"We gauged our response by the seriousness of the offense," said Eugene Police Sgt. Ron Tinseth, "This is a robbery II, considered a violent persons crime, and there's a public safety component and significant jail time."

Sgt. Tinseth said Deluca was booked into the Lane County Jail on a felony robbery charge.
