Police: One cited for trespassing at the free speech plaza
EUGENE, Ore. -- One woman was issued a criminal trespassing citation at the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza Thursday afternoon after a group of around 50 people entered the old Eugene courthouse grounds while it was closed for cleaning.
The county administrator told members of the group to leave the closed plaza, or face a possible arrest.
Arriving police officers waited for the trespassers to leave, yet all but one voluntarily left the grounds.
At around 2:15 p.m. Thursday police cited Alley Valkyrie, 30 of Eugene, for second degree criminal trespass.
The Free Speech Plaza at 8th and Oak Streets was closed for cleaning on Tuesday night. Over the past few days the City of Eugene said that it has been working with organizers around town to find constitutional alternatives for groups to peaceably assemble.
