DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- Roseburg police say a man on a stolen motorcycle led them on a high speed chase from Roseburg to Oakland early Tuesday morning.
Police say they were called to the Diamond Lake Chevron at around 4:00 am, for a report of a man who was acting disorderly. While the officers were headed there, witnesses say the man, later identified as John Richard Wilkerson, 37, of Roseburg, took off on a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Police say they found him riding the motorcycle in the 1900 block of Douglas Avenue. When an officer attempted a traffic stop, they say Wilkerson sped off.
Police chased the man onto Interstate 5 northbound from the Harvard on-ramp. Officers say Wilkerson led them on a pursuit into Oakland and back south into Sutherlin.
Police say Wilkerson rode back on to I-5, this time heading northbound in the southbound lanes. Police say they terminated the pursuit at that point.
Authorities say officers saw Wilkerson stop at the top of a hill north of Sutherlin and took off on foot. Sheriff's deputies say they found him and took him into custody.
Wilkerson was charged by police with attempting to elude, reckless driving and unlawful use of a motor vehicle. Officers say the man caused damage to a patrol car's backseat and was additionally charged with criminal mischief.
Wilkerson was lodged in the Douglas County Jail.
