Police: Man on bike runs stop sign, hit and killed by car

EUGENE, Ore. - A man on a motorized bicycle ran a stop sign and started to make a U-turn when he crossed the path of a sedan Sunday afternoon, Oregon State Police said.

The man on the bike, 56-year-old Steven Emery Burch of Eugene, later died at the hospital. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.

The man was visiting friends who lived nearby, police said.

Burch was northbound on Oak Drive around 3:30 p.m. when he rode the motorized bike through a stop sign at Howard Avenene, police said.

He was starting a U-turn when an oncoming Toyota Camry hit him, police said.

The 17-year-old driving the Camry was not injured or cited.

The Lane County Sheriff's Office initiated the investigation but called in Oregon State Police accident reconstruction experts to take over the investigation.
