PORTLAND, Ore. - Police detectives believe a Portland father shot and killed his daughter and then himself in their North Portland home Thursday.
The Oregon State Medical Examiner on Friday said 4-year-old Maribella Willard and her father, 34-year-old Jesse Willard, died of gunshot wounds to the head.
Neighbors say the emergency responders were crying as they left the house.
"I saw the EMT's running in the house and within three minutes one of them came out just bawling," neighbor Mia Sires said.
Police said Willard's wife Stephanie, who is the girl's mother, found the bodies in the family's home on the 4700 block of North Houghton Street at about 7 p.m. Thursday.
"What do you say to someone who has gone through something like this," Sires said.
The couple's other daughter was not home at the time of the shootings, police said.
Detectives learned that Willard was struggling with mental health issues before the shootings.
"All I can say is they seemed like a happy family -- the only one time I saw him upset was yesterday," Sires said.
