Police: Man collapses, dies on west Eugene sidewalk

EUGENE, Ore. -- A man collapsed and died on a sidewalk in the Bethel-Danebo neighborhood of Eugene Friday night shortly after walking away from a dispute a few blocks away.

Witnesses told police the man fell to the ground just after 7 p.m. near the intersection of Woodsboro and Phillip Streets.

33-year-old James Earl Jacobsen Jr. died shortly after leaving a dispute at a nearby home, Eugene Police Spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin said.

Lieutenant Sam Kamkar said the call initially sounded like a medical emergency. After fire crews arrived, they reported the man looked like he had been in a fight.

"The officers found the deceased ... several blocks away from where the fight took place, (which was) about a block and a half away on Liberty," Lt. Kamkar said.

The Eugene Police Violent Crimes Unit was called out to investigate the death. Spokeswoman McLaughlin said the medical examiner is still working to find out what caused Jacobsen's death.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Detective Jeff Donaca at 541.682.5193.

This is a developing story, updates will be posted as soon as they are available.
