Police: Fugitive crashes car on Yaquina Bay Bridge
NEWPORT, Ore. - A fugitive wanted in multiple states was captured after he crashed his car into oncoming traffic on the Yaquina Bay Bridge while trying to escape police Saturday.
Joshua B. Cherry, aka Robert Hernandez, 21, of Newport was booked into the Lincoln County Jail on charges of Attempt to Elude Vehicle, Attempt to Elude Foot, Reckless Driving and Reckless Endangering, as well as multiple fugitive warrants.
Police and sheriff's deputies made contact with Cherry on Saturday just after 2 p.m. He refused to obey commands from law enforcement and sped off southbound over the bridge.
With units from both the Newport Police Department and Lincoln County Sheriff's Office in pursuit, Cherry drove into traffic, hitting oncoming cars until a crash disabled his car in the center of the bridge, police said.
Cherry got out and tried to escape on foot before being caught by police.
